And then there is Joshua Tree

AMAZING! One day there’s a drought; next day someone says a prayer; and now enough is enough. Turn off the snow already.

In rains in Sunny California
May be an image of road
Most times it’s hard for me to believe that I’ve been living in SoCal for more than 27 years. One of the main reasons for me coming here was escaping from the snow and cold in Michigan. The plan was very successful until this year. But you all know this wherever you live in the contiguous 48 this year.

For the last 20 years I’ve been a part of the Saturday scrabble club in Escondido. They used to play weekly but after Covid they cut back to playing only once monthly. Today was the scheduled day to play there. Escondido is about 45 miles south and east of my home in Laguna Woods. On a normal Saturday morning at 9:30AM the southbound traffic on the 5 Freeway is busy but moving at 65 – 75 mph. I can make the one way trip in about an hour, arriving early enough to stop for a coffee before the games begin.
This morning’s ride brought back sweet memories of Michigan weather. NO, I did not have to deal with any snow. All that snow that you hear about on the news is at the higher elevations and mostly on the north side of LA. The local mountains were clobbered by as much as 7 feet of snow during this unusual blizzard. But the rains today were fierce. During most of my ride to and from the scrabble club I could only see a few feet beyond the nose of my trusty Yaris. The thing that bugs me most about the local drivers is that many do not think to turn on their lights. It sure helps to avoid accidents.
While driving in the storm I remembered all the harrowing situations during Michigan winters when I didn’t think twice about heading out into the elements. Even though living in West Bloomfield the games took me to Lansing, Flint, Rochester Hills and even further to Toronto, Gatlinburg, Dayton, or Kalamazoo.
Today in Escondido where the normal attendance is 12 . . . I was one of only 5 players who showed up. The rest sent text messages to director Jamie Covell with regrets (due to thee weather). Kinda wimpy by Michigan standards. P.S. The scrabble was fun and we all had a very fine time.
